Hype Auto Art
Hype Auto Art was inspired by a lifelong love of classic cars that goes right back to the 80s and my first car, a 1966 Ford Zodiac Mk3 bought with a school friend. This was quickly replaced by a 1960 Vauxhall PA Cresta which became the subject of one of my projects at art college (shown here) and I was later commissioned to produce an artist’s impression of a convertible version.
Many other classics followed; Mk2 Ford Zephyr, Mk4 Zodiac Executive, MG Magnette, Wolseley 6/99, Wolseley 6/110, Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 and even a 1956 Chevy V8 that returned just 12 mpg but looked and sounded awesome! Through all of these, the Cresta remained, having undergone 2 restorations in my 18 years’ ownership (proving their justified reputation for rusting). Family and mortgages came along and I finally sold the Cresta in the noughties after covering just 20 miles between MOTs, meaning that keeping it was too hard to justify.
The classic car bug never really went away though and I now spend my time tinkering with a couple of modern classics; a Chrysler 300C and a Rover 75 Connoisseur SE.
In fact, it was the latter that inspired me to start producing these t-shirts after posting a half-drawn illustration on a specialist FaceBook group to gauge interest. Overwhelmed by the reaction, I decided to finish the illustration and offer the first limited print run of personalised t-shirts. Thus Hype Auto Art was born.
How the artwork is produced
Each design is illustrated by hand in ink using Rotring pens that haven’t changed much since my art college days. This gives them their distinctive hand-drawn quality that can’t be reproduced on a computer.
The illustration is then imported into Adobe Illustrator on my trusty iMac and converted into digital vector artwork, which I then set up for screen print.
A hobby, or a business?
Hype Auto Art is perhaps a hobby more than a business, but this means that the passion you have for your classic car is shared with the passion that is put into every illustration.
Hopefully the small profits from each new design can be re-invested into the business to allow for more designs and a wider range of products.
I hope that our range of classic car gear gets your engine racing!
